The
Ittelson Center, a school for special-needs children, is an inviting
two-story brick structure. AOI Waterproofing, Inc., Brooklyn,
NY, was awarded the job of restoring the exterior brick.
According
to AOI Project Manager Yurek Koziej, the job presented challenges.
The brick was coated with at least six stubborn layers of lead-based
paint, to be removed while school was in session.
The
first step was to determine the best method for removing the leaded
paint. "While containing the lead-dust as dictated by the EPA
was the key consideration," reported Koziej, "we were equally
concerned with avoiding exposure to fumes and solvents."
Several
chemical paint stripping products were patch tested. Based on
the results, Koziej recommended the Peel Away* 1 Paint Removal
System, manufactured by Dumond Chemicals, Inc.
"During
patch testing, only Peel Away* could be sprayed with ease, adhered
well to the vertical surfaces, and stripped every layer of paint
in one application, without hazardous solvents or dangerous fumes,"
commented Koziej.
The
Peel Away* 1 System is an environmentally safe method of lead-based
paint removal, and includes a paste that is sprayed or spread
over the surface, and a fibrous laminated cloth that covers that
paste. The cloth controls evaporation by keeping the paint in
a wet or damp state, preventing lead-dust from entering the air.
The
AOI crew erected pipe scaffolding, and working from the top down,
sprayed the Peel Away to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. The Peel
Away* cloth was smoothed over the paste, and left to dwell for
24 hours.
Next,
the laminated cloth was peeled away, and with it, the bulk of
the paint, now combined with the paste to form an intact, damp
mass firmly attached to the Peel Away* cloth.
Other
than a ground cover of poly sheeting to collect a minimum amount
of run-off, no additional containment measures were required.
According
to Koziej, 10,000 square feet were stripped using the Peel Away*
1 Paint Removal System. The project was completed in five weeks,
with Koziej reporting a strip rate of 90% - 95% with one application
of Peel Away* 1.
